    Laserjet 4700 broken magenta cartridges

We have a potential customer that called us to look at their 4700. They called for noise. My tech went out & determined the Magenta cart. had broken gears in it. According to the customer this is the 4th or 5th time it's happened. They say they are getting about 100 pages out of the cartridges (always magenta) before they start making noise. They are using OEM cartridges. Any ideas ? We don't do much HP, and called Image1, but they said there aren't any known problems with those units.
    Thanks for any help.
    Hope that helps !
    -Tony

The 4600's had a problem like that, but I had nod encountered it on the 4700's. It was always the magenta on the 4600's.

Since the 4500, HP has had massive problems with their Magenta cartridges. It's always the Magenta cart. for some reason. I can't tell you how many 4500's & 4600's I was sent to vacuum out when I worked for HP.

We've had similar problems with these cartridges, especially magenta. After three vendors, we stayed with Sharper Image. At least the failure rate is no worse than OEM. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Sorry gents, it is a 4600. I assume you just keep replacing the magenta until you get a good cartridge ?
    Hope that helps !

actually, on the 4600 there is a factory defect that makes the machine eat its magenta cartridges. The cost of fixing this problem the way HP says it should be fixed is very costly as it involves changing out the supplies and other items. I never did the repair for anyone because of the cost so I can't provide specifics.

I have a 4600 that eats the magenta and cyan cartridges to and finally the customer complained to the vendor of the cartridges and they contacted HP and HP said they have never heard of that and this was just last week.

I would not put a lot of stock in what HP says, based on some of my dealings with them on behalf of some of my customers. My information about this being a defect from HP came from tech support from Parts Now, one of the largest sellers of HP parts in USA and Canada. I have delt with this since this printer came out, and it has always been the magenta that goes out. Maybe it is just me. I would not give your suppliers a lot of grief, because I have seen this happen just as often with OEM magenta cartridges.

    Great information!

I know of three machines to try this out on. Clearly the simplest solution is to change the media type to something other than "any".

    Thanks for sharing. =^..^=
