the hardest part is.. do you quote all 3 parts (if certain parts arent contained in the assembly) to the client?

by the time you order one part, change it and it doesnt fix it, then do the next etc, you are already way behind...

ordering all suggested parts will make it not worthwhile.. especially when a certain part is not require and cannot be returned.

Yes that is always a difficult situation. Until you take it apart you're not going to know what you are facing. The bushings are usually the most frequent problem. You tell you customer that it can be 1 of three parts and you won't know for sure until you get into it. Quote them between X and Y. Tell them it will hopefully be less than that, but that you wanted to give them best and worse case scenario. Preparing your customer is a better way of dealing with it. Sometimes they will decline repair and buy a better unit.

As for the part return, I don't know how vendor return policies are in your country, but in the states vendors have what is known as a restocking fee. Unless you are opening an OEM circuit board usually they will let you return it. (I used to save the circuit boards for last for that reason.) The parts you are ordering shouldn't fall into that category. Explain your problem to the vendor when you order and ask about their policy. Make sure you write down the name of the person who talked to you so that you have some recourse against a person promising something and failing to deliver. If they want to retain your business, they will work with you. If not, maybe you should consider another vendor.

Do not forget to quote the labor involved.
The labor alone can be half the cost of a replacement printer.
And quote labor high this is for CYA purposes, it is better for the final invoice to be lower that the quote.

When you remove the top cover there is a solenoid with turn the carousel. Sometimes is sticky and alignment is not possible ,trie to insert a piece of paper between the contact of the solenoid good luck.

Thumbs up

Just a followup for the thread info.....

I have this exact problem, I have experimented with the cartridges, and if all cartridges are removed, only the last one cannot be inserted as the carousel does not line up correctly (regardless of which color it is, as long as it is the last one being installed).

I can tell you however, that this has only happened after I attempted to use a non-oem cartridge which had a totally jacked up roller gear thing, which was super hard to turn. It was so hard to turn that it made the teeth grind when it was attempting to turn the gear when I installed the cartridge. I exchanged that one for another (non-oem), and after that, that specific color (magenta) would not work when printing. All the other colors seemed to be ok.

I'm fairly mechanical but have never messed with a printer before (I normally do automotive electronics, electronics component repairs), so I guess I'll take it apart and see what the deal is.

Before I read this thread I figured some sort of synching gear or indexing gear or something had to be off somewhere due to gear slippage from the stiff cartridge gear, but this thread definitely helped to point me in the right direction So I will check out the carousel drive and the solenoid.

Awesome forum here, and at least I have something new to tinker with and hopefully not break LOL

Ok all fixed, thanks to you guys!

It took me a while to get the case apart without any tab damage since I've never had to disassemble a printer before.

I checked the index marks on the gears and the carousel and they were correct.

Then I noticed that what was causing the carousel to go past the stopping point was partly the weight of the other cartridges with the centrifugal motion. It just wasn't catching the notch. Solenoid was working perfectly, but then like Realtech mentioned, I checked and there was a sticky patch where I assume there was a pad on the arm. At that point I realized that the arm was simply being stuck for a microsecond too long to come back down to catch the notch properly, and even though it was stopping close to the correct point, the centrifugal motion was carrying it like 1/2" further. Small tab of paper in there and it's all fixed

My non-oem cartridge's stiff roller gear was probably just causing other weird noises, which I then associated with the loading problem. It did happen at the same time though which is weird.

Apparently the missing colors were happening due to the arm not catching the notch in time and the centrifugal motion pulling the carousel just slightly out of position.

You guys are awesome!!!

I've had issues with that solenoid before as well. I need to update my service note. I either replace it or I've removed the pad and put a small piece of black electrical tape to fix it. Glad we could be of service.
