HP 4000 paper feed guide assembly replacement

I have a HP 4000 that has the transfer roller holder clips broken( black plastic clips that hold the transfer roller holder w/ the spring in place). No where in the manual do I see the proceedure to replace the paper feed guide assembly. Has anyone replaced this before? Is there info on this proceedure?

Yup...and it's real fun to change too.

    1) Remove all covers
    2) Remove formatter cage and metal shield behind it
    3) Disconnect purple cable that is located under where the formatter was
    4) Remove 2 extra long screws from either side of the Tray 1 P/U Asm
    5) remove black screw on the left side under the fan
    6) Lift top part of the printer straight up, separating the lower portion that has the tray/s from the printer section
    7) Turn the printer section upside down exposing the Engine Controller board
    8) remove all screws securing this board including the 3 recessed ones
    9) disconnect the power switch bar
    10) lift the engine board, disconnect all the cables, and set it aside
    11) remove 2 screws securing the paper feed guide, lift it out to remove it
    12) Before you put in the new one, clean the registration sensor block really good.

    Have fun!

Well, thats one way to do it, but it sure seems like a lot of work. Might I suggest just swapping it out with another one. I pick these hp 4000's up all the time used (auctions, recycling centers, etc.). Many times, nothing is wrong with them. You can resell them for a couple hundred or use for parts, but if your looking at a problem thats going to take more than a few minutes to fix, I just swap out the printer, charge for what it would have taken to fix it, part out the old one & throw away.

Good idea, Tom and it would save time. Of course, I have lots of customers who buy these paper feed guides and replacing the part is a fun project too. Your choice.

Re: HP 4000 paper feed guide assembly replacement

OK, I have a parts machine and was going to steal the Paper Feed Guide Assembly from it to fix a customers machine but I found my parts machine had a broken clip also. Surfing the net I found one guy who said he made a new clip using a paper clip. Since I had the Paper Guide Assembly out I thought I'd try my hand at a "Rubber band" repair job. So here is a quick photo blog of my paperclip repair trick. Tell me what you think...

I did this a few times, but it only took me 10 minutes; I didnt remove all that stuff its simple...
Pull toner out get paper clip hot; I then used super glue to holdn in place still going strong.

Yes I used this unit I tore out of my parts machine but I intend to go back and do this repair on a customers machine in their office. With the triangle design on my "Paperclip" I didn't need to glue it in place.

Re: HP 4000 paper feed guide assembly replacement

I know this is an old thread, but it's the one I found after I broke the clips on mine while replacing the transfer roller too. I just wanted to share my 'fix', which does not require a blow-torch.

I bork the clip on the right - the one with the white plastic guide over the spring. Without the clip, the transfer roller was pushed up way too high. I just used wire cutters to snip off about 5 coils of the spring, which holds the roller at the right height. I started with 3 coils, and just kept snipping off pieces until it looked level. It's only been a day and the printer only gets light use, but so far so good!
