HP LaserJet P40x5 Series Printers - Error "Install black cartridge"
ISSUE:
We have seen several P40xx series printers with the following message, even if new toner cartridges (CC364A) are installed. The message always returns:
Install black cartridge
Situation:
The printer shows the message install black cartridge on the control panel. If you follow the instruction and install a new cartridge, you will see the message HP toner installed on the control panel, but after a few moments, the message Install black cartridge returns.
The customers tried several new cartridges, but without success. The call center sent a CE onsite, who changed the power supply unit, the dc controller, the formatter, and he checked the release arm (top cover/drum drive).
The Firmware is the latest one from hp.com, version 04.047.2.
The system setup submenu point “REPLACE BLACK CARTRIDGE” is always on default Setting = OVERRIDE AT OUT. But the printer does not print. All parts are changed and look good, but the error message still persists.
SOLUTION:
It appears that one of the cartridges bias voltage contact springs is not connecting to the cartridge.
There are two springs located to the left of the Registration Assembly (see the following picture), and when the inner one is not contacting the cartridge, the Install Black Cartridge message is displayed.
We have seen some situations where the spring can get jammed in its recessed position and will not make contact.
Fix:
The usual fix is just to wiggle the spring, and it pops up to its normal position.
If the spring is properly extended and the error message is still displayed, then proper contact between the bottom of the spring and the HVPS should be checked. Finally, if the spring is pulled out of position (indicated by a free end in the cartridge area), the engine has to be scrapped because that portion of the frame is not replaceable.
NOTE: For your information, when the outer of the two contact springs does not make contact, it shows “Remove Cartridge Shipping Locks” on the display.
