    It's the bias springs on left side;

HP LaserJet P40x5 Series Printers - Error "Install black cartridge"

    ISSUE:
We have seen several P40xx series printers with the following message, even if new toner cartridges (CC364A) are installed. The message always returns:
    Install black cartridge
    Situation:
The printer shows the message install black cartridge on the control panel. If you follow the instruction and install a new cartridge, you will see the message HP toner installed on the control panel, but after a few moments, the message Install black cartridge returns.
The customers tried several new cartridges, but without success. The call center sent a CE onsite, who changed the power supply unit, the dc controller, the formatter, and he checked the release arm (top cover/drum drive).
The Firmware is the latest one from hp.com, version 04.047.2.
The system setup submenu point “REPLACE BLACK CARTRIDGE” is always on default Setting = OVERRIDE AT OUT. But the printer does not print. All parts are changed and look good, but the error message still persists.

    SOLUTION:
It appears that one of the cartridges bias voltage contact springs is not connecting to the cartridge.
There are two springs located to the left of the Registration Assembly (see the following picture), and when the inner one is not contacting the cartridge, the Install Black Cartridge message is displayed.

We have seen some situations where the spring can get jammed in its recessed position and will not make contact.
    Fix:
The usual fix is just to wiggle the spring, and it pops up to its normal position.
If the spring is properly extended and the error message is still displayed, then proper contact between the bottom of the spring and the HVPS should be checked. Finally, if the spring is pulled out of position (indicated by a free end in the cartridge area), the engine has to be scrapped because that portion of the frame is not replaceable.
NOTE: For your information, when the outer of the two contact springs does not make contact, it shows “Remove Cartridge Shipping Locks” on the display.

    Hey Faxman........

That is exactly what happened to this unit. However...the spring was to ' mangled ' to straighten and re-position. Do you have a part number for those springs ? If so......I would really appreciate you sharing that number.

unfortunatley it looks like the printer is dead, no springs or left frame part listed on hp parts site. If you have other hp printers you use for parts, like 4200/4300 series part maybe same or close enough. There's always duc tape, paper clip and bailing wire.

Well.....the paper clip was too brittle, not enough tensil strength to hold it's form after bent one time. OH WELL

The bailing wire we had was too thick to work properly, cartridge would not seat correctly. OH WELL

No ' dead ' HP's that still have the correct style spring. We will probably try to take a flat spring from an old printer and try to form it and see if that will work.

    Thanks for the input .

When we get the time, we will put our R.E. skills to work and see what happens.

Re: 4015 Not recognizing toner cartridge

Has anyone found a part number, or any info on this spring ?
We still are having fun with this one. We have not found a usable 'spring '
yet . Any more suggestions ?

Re: 4015 Not recognizing toner cartridge

Anybody got a picture of what it's supposed to look like? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Cool Re: 4015 Not recognizing toner cartridge

Had a VERY SIMILAR problem on a CLJ and it ended up the whole machine had to be replaced. Symptom, if I recall correctly, was Cyan kept fading out. It would go away from time to time, but always come back. I believe the frame was cracked (left side HV contact area) and had to be replaced. I mean the ENTIRE PRINTER!!!
It's wise to caution ALL your color HP customers to be very careful when installing/removing cartridges, regardless of how frustrated they may be with a paper jam or whatever.

Re: 4015 Not recognizing toner cartridge

We have a used P4014 transfer assembly (entire plastic frame the transfer roller and registration asm fits into) complete with these contacts. Send me a PM if you want it and I'll tell you what we'll sell it to you for.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

Re: 4015 Not recognizing toner cartridge

    YIPPEE !!!!!!!

We got the Transfer Assembly from prntrfxr ; got it installed ; replaced a broken piece on the drum drive (BORROWED from another printer in for repair ): we have run a couple hundred prints through this unit and all seems OK .

After the transfer assembly install, we were getting jams on every sheet at the transfer roller. After much sweat, hair pulling, etc. we found that the stop on the drum drive unit ‘bushing’ was broken, allowing the cartridge to go too far into the printer .

This caused the drum gear in the cartridge to be out of alignment with the drum drive gear on the frame; with the drum not turning, the paper jams right there at the drum .
We think this was the original problem : that the customer taking the cartridge in and out broke that piece causing all the jams , and then the contacts were bent causing the error of the cartridge not being recognized . Who knows .

ANYWAY ........ It's working ...... and THANKS to all for the assistance .
