    In a moment of carelessness ...

    My customer ran out of toner on their HP LJ2300.
    So they changed the cartridge. Later that day paper ran out in tray #2 so it took paper from tray #1 (or tried to). Then the noise started. First as a loud banging, then a steady thump, thump, thump ... and it wouldn't feed anymore. That's the way I figure it.

    I diagnosed it backwards. Effect, effect, cause, effect. I noticed the registration wasn't turning, and found my way to gear 17T (and the thumping noise). Then I noticed that the tray #1 sector gear/clutch wouldn't start rotating when the solenoid released. That was because of the nice twist in the square shaft. Canon's are well know for twisting these square shafts. Once I got the shaft straightened, then I noticed the pull tab wedged in under the left cam. With that fixed, I noticed the lift plate flopping around at the left side. The arm was easy enough to change, but the frame ... what to do about that? SPC (small paper clip) and a little cyanoacetate, to create a loop for the arm to ride in.

    When they pulled off the strip, they let it drop in tray #1. It fed in with the first page and the plastic pull got wedged below the left lift cam. The slotted feature in the frame broke out, and the post snapped off the left arm. When it still couldn't turn, the tray #1 feed shaft twisted 1/4 turn. When it still couldn't turn, gear 17T in the main drive lost a few teeth to relieve to strain. This gear 17T turns the tray #1 feed and the registration roller, or it used to.

    That main drive is pretty easy to disassemble on this one, especially once you've done it 5 times in two hours. Fortunately for me I had a scrap LJ2200 to donate parts.

    All because of a moment of carelessness. =^..^=
