Why are some paper types disabled in driver?

I had posted about having problems with prints being a few millimeters off center and my job storage options being gone. As I assumed it was because I was using the universal driver, after installing the driver specific to my model all those problems went away. I'm using the HP CM3530.

However I have a new problem, some paper types in the paper type list are disabled, such as:
    -Brochure 131-175g
    -Photo/Cover 176-220g

Why are these options now disabled? I often print on these heavier papers and now I can't set the right paper type.

    Thanks

Re: Why are some paper types disabled in driver?

I noticed the 2 disabled options are supposed to be categories with paper types listed under them but there are none listed.

I tried rebooting the printer and computer and they still aren't there.

What do I need to do to get the missing paper types to appear?

      Thanks

        What the heck, I'm bored!

Did you check on the printer specifications if those paper types are supported by the printer? That might be one reason why those paper types are disabled on the driver.

I've checked on the brochure for the paper types, and these are indicated:

"Paper (plain, preprinted, letterhead, prepunched, bond, recycled, color, light, intermediate, heavy, extra heavy, rough, glossy, heavy glossy, tough), transparencies, labels, envelopes, card stock."

        No brochure or photo/cover, though.

Did you tell the printer ( from the control panel) what paper you wanted in the tray????

Brochure/Cover is a category of paper types where the "extra heavy, glossy, heavy glossy & card stock" types were listed under, that category is now empty with all those paper types missing. Those paper types were in the driver before and are on the printer, but it's infinately more simple to be able to specify the paper type in the print settings in the driver.

I very, very often switch from one paper type to another, so much so that being able to choose the paper type in the driver was one of my main reasons for going with HP (with my Canon you had to go through a painstaking process on the machine itself every single time).

An HP help page said if bi directional communication is enabled that the printer should tell the computer what paper types are supported and add them to the list, but I even rebooted both the machine and computer and the "thicker" paper types are still missing.

I know I can set the driver to unspecified and set the paper type on the printer (none of them are missing there) but it's overly complicated for nothing considering how often I switch paper types (plain, heavy, extra heavy, card stock, glossy, labels are types I use regularly).

I have the printer's Tray 1 set to "Any type" so that I can specify it on a per-job basis from the computer, this had always worked until I changed the driver.

              Thanks

Well, if the machine has those types of paper on the op panel, then that's definitely not the problem.

You mention bidirectional communication - what kind of connection are you using? Network? USB?

Also, it wouldn't hurt to try other driver types (PCL5 instead of PCL6, if there is one, or vice-versa) or versions (try an older version, maybe it's a software bug on the driver).

The printer is over a network, connected directly to the router by ethernet cable (not on a print server).

I'm using the PCL6 driver, I don't remember a PCL5 driver (I'm unable to access the HP website right now to check), there is a universal driver but I hate it because prints come out misaligned and it doesn't allow me to use the printer's job storage function.

                  Thanks

Re: Why are some paper types disabled in driver?

Well, I've checked HP's site (Hello Scrompton!) and I've noticed that there's only PCL6 driver for your printer.

On the other hand, I noticed that there are two Universal drivers: PCL6 and PCL5. Why don't you try the other one opposed to the one you were using? Maybe it solves the centering problems and still give you the paper types you need.

Other than that, sorry for not being of further help - I usually don't lay my hands on HP machines.

                    Good luck!

Can you please let me know why?

My previous laser machine was a Canon and it was a ridiculous laughable joke (limit of 99 pages per print job, even when printing from PC, the most un-user friendly machine I have EVER had, no toner level indication whatsoever, and too many other problems to remember).

                          from aab1......

Can I delete my account from this useless website?
I came here for help because I got my first laser copier after having only inkjets for decades. I needed help with the various different issues you can have with laser printers.

It quickly became apparent that this is seemingly a clown forum with no actual techs to help anyone. There are other forums where the members actually help each other and I get my questions answered there, whereas in the year or so I've been here I don't even know if I got one helpful reply.

This forum is nothing but a huge waste of time, how can I delete my account, and ideally all threads from this forum?

I'm done wasting my time here, it's obvious no one wants to provide help to others.

Please, show me the door and how to lock it by telling me where I go to delete my account (I use many other websites using this same forum software but never before have I subscribed to a forum so less than useless that I want to ban myself from it so I've never had to do this before).
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints

I really can't tell you why - I really don't know much about HP machines. If you had a Ricoh or a Konica Minolta machine, maybe I could tell you more, but not this one.

On the other hand, you have so much negative reputation on this forum that you need to struggle a lot to be able to get back to the green - people just don't trust you.

I must confess I was expecting an ass-hat reply when I first posted on this thread, and was surprised when I didn't get one.
