hp clj 5550n jamming at the fuser with color prints

I have a customer with a clj 5550n and it jams in the fuser when they print color pictures about 70% of the time. Upon arrival, they had me install a new oem fuser, they are using all oem toners and the printer is in good mechanical working order, new feed/ sep and pu rollers, with a total count of 217846 on mono and 121994 on color. The jam codes are 13.09.00 ( fuser jam). I changed the plain paper setting to just about every option to possibly have it run through the fuser slower, less heat etc, it seems the best setting for plain paper is envelope setting with a result of 10% jamming or less. I understand this particular box has issues with jamming in the fuser with heavy concentrations of toner, such a pictures. The customer is also using office brand 30% recycled paper. I recommended they switch to a name brand paper with a weight of at least 24 lbs to try to resolve the paper with photos from jamming? Has anybody encountered this issue and what have you done to resolve the issue?

Re: hp clj 5550n jamming at the fuser with color prints

As you say this is a very common issue seen with HP OEM uints and aftermarket.

With regards to the customers prints, do they print very close to the full size of paper...?
what I mean is the picture almost edge to edge on the page.

What I have done in the past is to ask the end user to reduce the print size of picture on page.
what I mean by this is to allow a larger leading edge of the paper to stay clear so the fuser has a good chance to nip the paper before
    toner is being fused.

In some cases the paper curls around the fuser or the first 3mm / 4mm of printed paper sticks to the plastic picker finger rail.

if you print a Demo page from the machine you will note there is a 3mm / 4mm edge before the print is placed on the page.

Also changing density settings so less toner is placed onto page helps as a lower pile height of mixed colour.
Heavy mixed dark colour photo's are the worst for this issue.

Does this happen from first print too, sometimes its wise for the end user to print 10 pages of simple text to get fuser up to temp.
does this issue only happen from cold or if the printer has been running for some time.

Paper as said also is a key factor too.

But main fix is to change print size margin.

Thank you for the reply, Elliot, at first the customer had no border and I had them choose one from the driver option before they would send the print job and still experienced the jamming issue. The jamming will occur any time during the day, whether the box has been idle or running is they are an engineering company and print a lot of pictures. I willl try to turn down the density of the photos to help try to relieve the jamming issue as well.

I bought a ream of 24 lb paper and tried running that and still had the same jamming issue so, I turned down the density of the prints and all seems good; no more jamming, thank you for the insight.

This sounds exactly like a problem I am having at customers site. The odd thing is the demo page seems to jam at the fuser as well. Where can I adjust the toner density?

There is no toner density adjustment. Based on the information you provided, that machine either has a bad fuser or bad (or more likely non HP) toner units.
    Good luck.
