But there is plenty of paper in the tray.
What is going on? Is there a way to bypass or reset?
Thanks for the help,

make sure its not calling for a different media type. if i send a print job set to thick1 by mistake and its only set to plain ill get the same message. and vice versa...
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The media type is the same. Not doing an unusual print job...plain old 8.5x11.
Here's a screenshot:
FWIW, I have cleaned all the rollers, checked for jams, done a power reset, loaded fresh paper in the drawer..... I'm getting the out of paper message from my laptop as well.
When you change to Copy Mode does it also say "Load Paper Tray #1"? Tray #1 may be unable to lift ... maybe because there is paper behind the tray? Or you may have a lift motor problem, or a lift sensor problem, but check behind the paper tray first. =^..^=

Great ideas, thank you!
There was no paper behind the tray.
I just tried to copy something... wound up with this error:
Malfunction detected. Please call your technical Representative.
C-8103
Error
C8103,jam code 660x
Root Cause
DF-608, C8103 (C-8103) or possibly jam code 660x.
Workaround/Fix
PROBABLE CAUSES:
1. Binding or failed lift motor (M7).
Check for binding in the lift motor assembly (p/n 9J07 R707 00) and replace it if necessary.
2. The lift plate is not producing strong enough pressure.
Install mylar shims (p/n A01H 5615 00 and A01H 5616 01) under the lift plate to increase pressure. Multiple sheets can be used. See attached Bulletin Number 6278 for location and details.
Like Woxner says this is a secondary (unrelated) issue. Turn off the MFP, disconnect the document feeder, and continue to diagnose the paper tray. Once you figure that out, you can proceed with the C-8103 in the document feeder. =^..^=
