    I have tried in 'Custom display settings' in Admin but they are not listed, just copy, fax, sound settings etc...

    Perhaps then it is not possible.
    The only way to remove icons is to update the firmware.

    Just install latest firmware and grayed icons of apps will be gone from the menu screen.

    I thought only the 8 series had widgets

    I have web browser greyed out on ours and I never got to remove it.

    Even on 8 series I don't activate web browser. We don't get Market Place so UK is pointless for almost every customer

    I'm thinking this is a refurb with some orphaned app on it like Equitrac or Autostore. If so you can go into admin/Open API/ registered APPS. If you set this NO, it will remove any non KM apps.
