4 series fuser rebuilds ???

Has anyone tried replacing the roller or belt in the 224-454 fusers (NOT 554,654,754, they are different fuser)? I see there are aftermarket parts available.

I had good success using the aftermarket roller & belt in the C253's when the orange rollers would explode. Hopefully not as hard to do. The C253 was a nightmare! Eventually got it down to 1.5 hrs from 5 -6 hrs first time.

I know you have to bite the bullet sometimes but man it hurts when it's a contract customer and you have to lay out $600+ for a new fuser assembly.

Done the fluffy roller and the black one. Never tried the main ones.

I find heaps of dried toner on the black roller (soaking roller?) And by replacing it before it gets to much build up it avoids the main fuser rollers getting cut up.

Looks like a pain to do though

Thanks rrrohan but you are thinking of the 554, 654, 754 fusers which are different and use the replaceable cleaning rollers you mention. The 224 - 454 fusers are not serviceable. I corrected the models in my original post.

Which brings me to next question, can the C224 fuser work or be modified to work in the C454?

I compared a 454 fuser next to a 224 fuser and both look identical except shape of connector & label with temp on 454. Both have same 3 color wires going to connector. I'm almost tempted to switch connectors for experimental purposes and try in other machine. I have a feeling it will work.

Only other possible thing different could be the lamps which look the same but can't see the marking on lamps without taking apart, which looks like a nightmare to do.

The C25/35 and C3110 you just change the connector over.

Where the thermistors are wired in could give you some trouble probably need to changed them out to avoid cutting wires.

The only connecter different is the big one with bigger AC wires. The color of 3 wires going to connector are same size & color. The thermistor & other connector & wires same size & color wires.

Just trying to figure out what would be different for a little faster machine. 454 is only 10 ppm faster than the 364 which uses same fuser as 224.

Also trying figure out if better to test 224 fuser in 454 or 454 fuser in 224? Hate to burn out a good fuser, don't have a fuser with bad rollers, etc to use and wouldn't care if ruined. So want to be careful. That's why I was hoping someone tried and and can confirm if it works or not.

Well this is a lot more curious when you look at the prices for these fusers new:

c224/264/284/364/368/308 fuser: $431.95

(I am using Precision Roller as an easy baseline.)


The difference in price for the c224 and c554 is a mere $468.00--if these are easily "hackable" this is a worthwhile item to explore.
However, it seems to me, the only way to be certain is disassembly and comparison.

As copyman said, forget about C5/6/754e fusers to replace smaller. They are IH coil heated.
I have no parts manual for non 'e' models, but after close look at SM for C224e and C454e, fuser sections look exactly the same.
In a manual for C454e they rated fuser lamp 1 - 1180W and lamp 2 - 790W, but omited to rate them in manual for C224e-364e.
Small connector change and they looks like not interchangeable but IMHO, might be.

Going to see if my friend can grab me a 454 fuser. If he can't going to try the 224 fuser in the 454. I'll report back soon.

By the way tsbservice thanks for the lamp wattage, I missed that. It helps a lot because now I only have to take the 224 apart to look at wattage. Taking only one apart is less chance of ending up with 2 almost new fusers that don't work when put back together
Also would feel a lot better if lamp wattage was same before trying the swap.
