How to print on tabs as detected by ADF???

We every week prepare meeting agendas with about 50 tab dividers, one before each agenda point. The amount of pages for each agenda point varies from week to week. The agenda material is prepared hardcopy and many copies are made of the agenda. This requires manually inserting tabbed paper into each and every agenda copy after it is printed. Yuck...

We want to automate with our Bizhub 1050. But we can't get the copier to detect the tabbed paper in the Automatic Document Feeder and pull from a draw with tabbed paper in it. Why not? Are the tabs not big enough to be detected?

So, we tried to fool it by using 11x17 paper to represent the tabs in the ADF but to actually correctly print on tabs. But the 1050 is too smart and requires 11x17 paper to be put in the tabbed paper draw if that is what was put in the ADF between the regular 8.5x11 pagers. Doh!

There has got to be a way for the machine to build this job automatically from the ADF. Any ideas???

This is a semi-complicated process that can be achieved with the "Program Job" option.

First, you CANNOT feed tabs through the ADF, they must be scanned off the glass.
If you do not want to print on the tabs,m then use the insert sheet function as part of the program job.
If these tabs need to be printed, then the program job will work for you, but you MUST specify your original size as Tabs.
Also, be sure that the options: needless tab eject and tabshift are ON.

With a bit of preplanning and some extra time in the copying stage you can echieve your goal.
If you struggle, then ask your Application Specialist to go through it with you if possible.

The key to your success is using the PROGRAM JOB feature.

KVN - Thanks for the excellent reply. What you suggest is what we just tried today. It works well, but the process must be PRECISE! If when switching from scanning the tabs to scanning the regular paper you don't indicate the correct paper size source (like scanning the regular paper but keeping it on tab source) you are royally messed up! We are going to proceed this way since there is no better alternative, but in a few production jobs, we've had to scrap a few proofs and rescan. At 50 or more tabbed sections, the possibility for error is high.

What do you think of this: What if on the ADF I scanned a 11x17 or legal sheet instead of the tab but told the Bizhub to pull from a specific tray that actually had tabs in it? Is there anyway to fool the machine and have it just continue without erroring out and saying the paper in the tray is not what was scanned? Is there a "go ahead and pull from this draw anyway" button? :-)

Problem with that is you are most likely to have paperjams. The machine may not calculate the sheet size correctly.

It sounds like the complexity of the job is a task in it'self.
Only other solution is to use the "proof print" option. At least then you can run one, check it and then enter the remaining amount.

Other than scanning the file and printing it from a computer, you do not really have an option. Even this method will be complicated using the perpages option.

once you get the hang of this procedure, you will have less and less errors.

You mentioned scanning the file to the computer, how would I indicate which pages are the tabbed sheets? Do I scan it as a TIF or PDF? This may be a good option too.

I would scan as a PDF to keep the file size down.
You can use the "per pages/mixed media" option in the 1005 driver to specify which pages pull from what tray and what are tabs and even if you want a tab shift applied.
you can also create the tabs in the driver itself here and eliminate the need to even scan them.
