    Authentication via barcodes? WTF!

We've got a customer with several KM machines. Apparently he uses barcodes as authentication in other areas of his business (silly, if you ask me - if I grab someone's card I just need to photocopy it in order to use it). Now he wants to use the same method in order to restric copying and printing.

My question is: Is there any device that can be connected to recent KM machines that can read barcodes so the machine can accept the barcode content as passwords?

Nothing I am aware of that uses bar codes, there is the bio-metric scanning. You could get the Hecon keys at one time. Other than that I am only aware of the copy track features.

Could it be even remotely possible to connect an USB barcode reader so the machine can recognize it? If a PC can recognize the biometric and card reader USB options, maybe the opposite can also be done?

What models are you asking about specifically? I can take a look on an individual basis to see but I doubt very much if it would work.

I've seen kiosk devices that scan barcodes for specific things. A good example here in Canada, related to the national lottery 6/49, many places where you buy the ticket, the ticket will have a custom barcode generated, which can be inserted into any reader at any retail store that sells lottery tickets, and scanned directly to tell you in an instant if you have a winner and what you won.

I've seen magnetic card reader devices at some customers places, these are third party authentication machines plugged into the copier with one of the different "vendor" options set in CE mode. These devices are very proprietary, aside from the wire to the copier. All KM hardware has provision for coin op or similar authentication interface.

Please do not PM me for questions related to Konica Minolta hardware.
I will not answer requests or questions there.
Please ask in the KM forum for the benefit of others to see the question and give their input.

Some types of authentication are already known, as well as currently used Bizhub C360 - C280 - C220.

Sorry for continuing this off-topic, but that machine can't be all that bad. Because either that guy with red shorts hits like a girlie or the paper exit tray is very robust, since it took nine hits without breaking!

Although it should theoretically be possible to use any sort of input device for authentication, it would require a device driver to be installed on the copier, and KM doesn't support anything like this.
