Konica C650 with FS-608 wont saddle stitch anythign but plain paper....

Every where i read it claims it can staple, fold, and fold and center staple (saddle stitch) up to 80 pages, including up to 208gsm (THICK2).

I have yet to get it to saddle stitch anything but plain paper. From both the fiery, and regular drivers, to just making copies and selecting booklet as the finishing option, it wont let me press start unless its set to plain paper, i have worked around but using 70lb in tray 1, but set it as plain (even though its THICK1.

The product support material all say 208gsm. See here on page 13 under finishing,

    http://www.konicaminolta.com/hk/chi/...0/pdf/c650.pdf

let me know if anyone has this solution, client is getting pissy as I steered him from a C500 to a C650.

    thanks,

Generally in commercial brochures describes the maximum capabilities of the systems as well the maximum printing speed is measurement in A4 or letter plain paper. In this case the maximum capacity of the FS-608 is obtained with plain paper.

This description will answer the rest of your query.

    FS-608 spec =

That would be perfect, if it works, client wants to print 28 page booklets on 11x17 or 12x18, thats 7 sheets, 6 of 70lb (technically thick1, but can run through as plain paper), and a cover of THICK1+ (way less then 200gsm.

I am more concerned that it wont even let me, run it on anythign but plain paper. Tried even puting the 70lb in tray 1 as plain paper, put the cover stock, 65lb cover (120gsm) in tray 2, and just tried to make it pull the cover first, then the rest plain paper. Every spread is 4 pages, so in theory, 15 pages plus cover is a 64 page booklet.

I am only trying to do 7 pages (11x17) then saddle stitch them.. should be able to do it. Doing to work around is fine, but there are some print quality issues when you tell it that THICK1+ paper is plain paper, the machine doesnt adjsut the fuser or the speed for the thickness...

I know there is a firmware both for the MPF and for the fiery, but I am cool even if i can just use it without the fiery.

if anyone wants to work with me, i will pay them, for their time and for the firmware. I know how to install it, just my Konica guy makes it sound like its rocket science, and firmware although with older machines can mess stuff up they can only help in this case.

FINISHING TRAY 3: Plain Paper (17 lb. bond to 24 lb. bond)

FINISHING TRAY 3:Center Staple & Fold (5 bound sheets): 15 to 20 sets or less
    -----------------------------Half-Fold (3 sheets): 25 to 33 sets or less
    ------------------------------Tri-Fold (1 sheet): 50 sets or less

    Center Staple
    Plain Paper and Fold/ (17 lb. bond to 21.25 lb. bond): 20 sheets : (equivalent to 80-page booklets);
    -------------------- (21.25 lb. bond to 24 lb. bond):16 sheets : (equivalent to 64-page booklets)

    Saddle stitching /A3, B4S, A4S, 8 1/2 x 11S, 8KS
    -----------------Min. : 210 mm x 280 mm (8.25 inch x 11 inch)
    -----------------Max. : 311.1 mm x 457.2 mm (12.25 inch x 18 inch)
    -----------------5 sheets stitching: 15 to 20 sets

Never try to pass heavy paper by another type, is not recommended and may cause severe problems.

I think the possibilities are limited so as described in the specifications, you are trying to overcome that capacity, in my opinion contact a representative KM can explain personally, the maximum capabilities of the FS-608.

I have several customers who do this job regularly with great success.

This is how I have got them do it:

Print the front cover 1st using the correct settings for the thickness. Then run the rest of the job using cover insertion mode (BLANK), feeding the cover from either the bypass tray or ideally from the PI attached to the finisher. If you don't have a PI, I would recommend getting 1 if your customer wants to do this alot.

iLL TRY IT TODAY, PULLING COVER AS THICK1 FROM TRAY 1 AS A PREPRINTED BLANK PAGE. THEN RUN THE 28LB AS PLAIN PAPER. ITS ONLY 7 SHEETS INCLUDING THE COVER SHOULD BE OK.

JUST CANT GET IT TO PRINT AND PULL THAT COVER, ONLY WANTS TO CENTER STAPLE AND FOLD PLAIN PAPER. CAN YOU LOOK FOR FIRMWARE THAT ADDRESES THIS...

    Sorry, just to be clear:

If the customer wants to produce say 50 booklets, print 50 x the front cover using eg thick 1, then put the cover back into the machine in the bypass tray but change it from thick 1 to plain paper.
This has little or no effect on the quality of the cover as it has already fused. The machine will allow you to fold and staple the cover as an inserted sheet as long as the tray setting is plain paper.

The machine will only saddle stick "plain paper", no matter what i do, prepinting the covers - and telling it to pull from the bypass as a blank that i have not tried yet. But it should let me do 7 pages of plain paper + cover that thick1 or thick2.

I am being told firmware can be the issue, on the mpf, as even when i copy and select booklet at the finising option it wont work unless its plain paper, i can try to make it pull a thick one cover and see if that does it.

Trust me i am getting a c6500 when we move in january...

Firmware is not the issue. There are no "fixes" to this on the firmware level.

The finisher is meant to be a light duty finisher for office environment. Exceeding its physical limits is not supported by KM. There are tricks, as previously stated, but do not expect the machine to put up with those tricks for long.
