U917 Setting backup data reading/writing

Setup tool?...please do enlighten me on that one!...do both machines have to be "in place" for it to work?....If so, that wouldn't work in my situation since there is physically not any room at the client's place, or they don't have an additional network jack. Therefore the crossover cable to laptop and use of KM Net Viewer!



PS--we are talking about copying system settings and address book....correct?

Yep! You only need a USB flash drive and the software loaded on a PC or laptop. You can find the Setup tool on KDAConnect under Technical Resources > Print Utilities -> Any current model. It allows you to convert any U917 exported data to another model. The batch process feature allows you to convert a folder of files where you could only convert one at a time with the previous version.

Address book, account codes, & one touch keys can be converted in the setup tool. Things like progams can't be converted.
Unless you're using a laptop running 98 or XP, you don't need a crossover cable.

setup tool works great for the address book and one touch. I use it when I get a notice from sales that gives me time to go to the customer machine and do 917 then bring that back to the shop and use the setup tool to convert to the new machine and use 917 to load the address book and one touch into the new machine. That makes it easier on installation day when the new machine is delivered with the address book done. Getting the network status prints when I get the 917 info gives me what I need to load network settings ahead of time as well. The new machine usually works fine after the swap giving me time to just go around and update drivers.

If I don't get advance notice, I've used KMNet Viewer to do the move.

That's what everybody keeps telling me, yet when I get a couple days notice from sales I can make a 2 minute stop at the customers office and get what I need from the old machine. I easily convert it and move it to the new machine in the shop and within a minute of moving the old machine out the new machine is in place and fully functional.




KM Net Viewer is great and I do use it for on site transfers, but it takes a little while to get it done on site.

You can also use the Setup tool, which is pretty intuitive and quick now.

Are you using v3? If you know it "inside out," then how could it be counterintuitive? If it's not working, it seems the problem is something other than the intuitiveness of the program.
