    3550idn Frame busted

The black plastic "Feed Frame" has a broken cassette lift gear post resulting in clacking noises and tray 1 errors. This looks nearly impossible to replace. I was able to pry the plastic frame from the metal frame about an inch to confirm my fears.

I had to call Dallas just to get the part number because the book doesn't even have it.

Anyone had to do this? I am wondering if it's even field serviceable.

    Thanks

I imagine it would look a lot like this:

    FS4100DN Cassette Lift1.JPGFS4100DN Cassette Lift2.JPG

This is a FS-4100DN right inner cassette rail/ lift drive, and yes two of the posts were broken, and yes, AFAIK there is no separate part number. My MacGuyver in the right view is done by stringing up all the various broken parts on long 3mm screws and nuts, then super-glued. So far-so good.

If it's built like the FS-4100DN, you'll need to remove the power supply and network card from the right outer frame to access the three screws securing the right cassette rail. From the bottom, you'll remove the cross-braces, duplex guides, and tray feed assy before the rail can be wiggled out of there. It would be a good idea to have all the consumables out of it, since at various times it will be laying on it's back, or it's top, or it's side. I had two hours into it before it was re-assembled.

    Does that help? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Yep, thanks for taking the time posting that. I was able to order the frame. The book makes the frame appear to be one solid structure, however, your picture suggests that right side can be removed separately. That will save me lots of time.

PS I've done that same screw and nut trick for the 4551ci second transfer retraction ass'y

I tried, but was not successful on that one. There is a lot of spring tension on that retraction assembly. It survived 3 cycles before breaking again.

    Re: 3550idn Frame busted

You're lucky it happened to you on a different model.

The part I was after was this process unit.jpg.

It's the only thing in the 3550idn manual that could possible be it. I had to call Dallas parts department to get the p/n. It showed up the next day and was obviously wrong. I called Dallas again and tried to explain what I was looking for. The girl on the phone was helpful but she didn't have a machine near her so it was getting increasingly frustrating. Finally something clicked in her head and she remembered this problem happening to other techs. She directed me to the 4200dn manual and voila there's the part. 4200 drive.jpg

It's actually hard to believe this big of an omission by Kyocera. Not only is the gear post known to break, but there's like 4 gears in there that I guess you can't get.

The disassembly was not so bad. There was a minor scare though, when I first tested it the lift motor gave off a very loud buzz. I was able to see the smallest bit of the motor from the cassette area. I took a small flat blade and slid it ever so slightly and all was good.

Very interesting. I did call the hotline but as soon as I mentioned I needed a part number they couldn't off the phone fast enough. Maybe they could've saved me some trouble.
