    TA3500i background on scanned documents

There is a background only when scanning, not visible when copying. Have cleaned the optics and calibrated with chart 1 in U411.

Any different scanning from the glass vs. Doc Feeder?

Are you scanning in color? Or B/W? Can make a difference.

I'm thinking it must be a color scan, since the background has a reddish hue.

If it were focus, it would appear worst at the trailing edge. Perhaps one of your mirrors is slightly loose/unfocused, or maybe it has a coating of something that doesn't come off with glass cleaner. Check each mirror to see if it rocks at either end, and re-clean the mirrors with 91% alcohol.

I know this machine does not use fuser oil, but machines that did would get this affect from fuser oil vapor on the mirrors and lenses.

It's got to be dirt or focus. That's it. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Double check the little Black hard plastic square "pads" that the scanner mirror assembly slides on the rails with. I've had them disintegrate and cause some odd scanned images. Admittedly this would be in the copies too but maybe ones just worn down.

The strange thing is that you get the a coloured background even if you scan in B/W.
