PF-740(B) tray 3 not lifting properly

I have a 4501i with 300K on it with a PF-740(B) LCT. When you fill tray 3 (the right hand one) over half full, you can hear it straining to lift and then kicks it out, saying tray 3 cannot be used because of a failure. Tray 4 works fine. I don't see a problem with it.... nothing broken, the paper is in correctly and not stopping it from lifting, it seems to lift straight. Run sim 906 and it resets. As long it's less than 1/2 full, it works fine. Anyone run into this? Thanks.... Jeff M.

Pull both trays out completely and check for torn pieces of paper on the back side. If everything is ok, you will most likely need a new lift motor for the the tray 3 (There are 2 of them, 1 behind each tray). Since the lift motors are the same you can test by swapping them and see how it goes.

Thanks, Kyo fan. I'll check it out later today. I looked for torn paper when I was there last time (although I didn't remove the trays) but I don't think there is anything stopping it from lifting, because wouldn't it stop the lift regardless of how much paper is in the cassette? But it's definitely worth another look. Appreciate the quick response! Jeff M.

I agree .. swap lift motors and run tests. Xerox had some models that the lift motor were SH!T. Ricoh's white lift motors failed regularly also.

I switched tray 3 and 4 lift motors, and now both are working fine...... ??? No noise, fill both trays up and they lift smoothly. I'm sure it will happen again, but to which tray? To be continued..... Jeff M.

I would have a lift motor on the ready, the motor that is now on the cass 4 side is likely to have a broken tooth internally (common failure) and probably will fail again.
If you phrase your inquiry properly, you will get the answers you seek...

Good Luck ... You'll need it! HAHAHA!

That was my thought. I'm ordering one to have, because I'm sure I'll need it soon. They don't fix themselves, so it's only a matter of time.
Thanks again for the responses. Jeff M.

Update: Sure enough, the motor failed again. We replaced it, and all is well. I sincerely appreciate your responses. Merry Christmas to everyone! Jeff M.
