What do scans look like? Did you do a scanner calibration?
I think that I would have started with re-seating cables, then the CCD. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Since you state that printing does not have a problem, it is narrowed down to scanning the original for copies. Is it from the ADF only or from the platen as well? If you are getting this from the ADF only check to make sure that someone has not dislodged the scanner lock lever resulting in the scanner not get to the home position when using the ADF, platen copies are OK. Had one a couple of months ago that exhibited the same output only to discover that someone had moved the scanner lock lever half way and it kept the scanner from fully getting to the proper position when using the ADF. Platen copies were fine. Worth a look.
It's working with platen cover, and the scanner locker is in normal position.

You know, I remember something. I remember the black scans. This series would blow engine boards. They were covered under warranty for a while. =^..^=

If prints are OK and it can scan from the platen OK, then I would suspect that something is keeping the scanner from reaching the home position to scan from the adf. The scanner cannot get to the proper position when using the ADF and it is scanning the frame between the slit glass and the platen. Is the alignment of the ADF to the machine OK? If the ADF has been abused it may be skewed to the point that the documents are beyond the scanning point of where they should be for the ADF. There is an adjustment for ADF skew located in the compartment that houses the microcolth on the backside of the ADF. However I still feel that your scanner is not getting back to the home position for the ADF. Have you replaced the scanner home position Sensor?
Yes, It was common when the PSU went bad(Pregnant Caps) or blew, it takes out the eng/main board, and then you get black scans/copies.
