    It is called the Envelope Conditioner which allows the unevenness of the envelope flap to adjust so the envelope does not get wrinkled. This is why you hear the thumping when an envelope is fed through the multipurposefeeder or manual feeder slot.

    thanks for the replies all. havent heard about the machine since i posted the question. (thats beauracratic red tape for ya) but the thumper soleniod certainly makes sense and i totally agree with it at this point. until the stuffed shirts decide to take it any further i guess we will not conclusively know. ta muchly everyone who had thoughts on this.
