I've found a tear in the scanner ribbon cable where it pulls when you open the top. Have you ever attempted to repair a ribbon cable? I must be channeling my inner MacGuyver today.
With a sharp knife blade I scraped away the upper layer pf plastic insulation to expose ~ 6mm of conductor at the tear (two far left conductors). With a pointy tool I dabbed on a small amount of resin. I let the soldering iron reach temp, then rapid-soldered two small beads of solder on the cracks. Naturally the backing plastic melted back, but there's enough basic structure to the ribbon. To keep the conductors apart I covered the repair with self-adhesive mylar.
I don't think it would work in a place where there's a lot of flexing, but this was not.
By the way there is a firmware update that's supposed to fix 844.02 codes, but I don't think it would do a thing for the ripped ribbon cable. =^..^=
