Tips/resources for a new tech?

I am a new member as well as a new technician. I got lucky and got hired to train at a local small repair place. I have been training for a few weeks, and took my first solo calls this week. I fixed some machines that had some common problems.

I fucked up my first machine today. I was installing a first in a Kyocera 1135 and pinched a wire. The thing popped a Jam20 code even after I cleared the jam. The boss was not thrilled but said it happens to everyone at some point.

Any general help for newbs would be appreciated, especially about how to handle and avoid technician error.

Recommendation #1: Don't do stupid stuff (like I do).

Congratulations on getting into copier repair. You're in the steepest part of the learning curve right now.
To you that means everything gets easier from here.

Thanks. I got lucky and had an in with the owner. I love the work (when I fix something). Successfully diagnosing and replacing a fuser today was more fun than work. Still beating myself up about the other fuser I ruined though.

The other techs directed me here, and most google searches for error codes lead here. Great resource.

Welcome Aboard! Don't beat yourself up to much for missing a fuser problem, as Blackcat said don't do stupid stuff as I do and it holds true. No matter how long we have being doing this job we all do "stupid stuff". Case in in point, a few weeks ago installing a new drum during a PM, missed the drum guides and scratched the new drum, while 100 miles from the office. Simple error, but more importantly is learning from the mistake.

We sell Kyocera, but service every brand, which has been the biggest challenge. Would be much easier if it was just one or two brands.

Everyone boo boos at some point. you will do that numerous times its just part of it. I have 24 years in this and still sometimes slip up. worst part is when things are going good and you decide to go ahead with a pm because you don't want to come back and you break something and the copier is down till you get the part. that's a killer. I would bet that has happened to every tech at some point.
