    Post your question in the Canon forum if you want a faster reply. This is the newbie welcome forum. Welcome, BTW.
    Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

    There are a combination of sensors, arms and levers that measure the amount of paper in each tray. Check to make sure your tray is not cracked or broken, and do you hear a ratcheting sound when you push the tray into the machine? If you do not then a new pick up assembly might be needed as well.

    HI

    <Symptom>
    When the machine is left unattended for a period of time, Pick-Up Delay Jams or lifter failure (i.e., failing to move
    up) can occur when the machine is turned on the first time (e.g., in the morning).
    <Cause>
    The friction in the area of contact between the Lock Cam and the Leaf Spring increases, preventing the 46T Gear
    from rotating even when the Pick-Up Solenoid goes on (or, the Gear starts to rotate after a delay) and ultimately
    causing Pick-Up Roller or Lifter operation failure.
    <Factory measures>
    Add a roll to the Cam surface to decrease the friction between the Lock Cam and the Leaf Spring and in addition,
    increase the force of the Spring to raise the latitude.
