I have lived next to Fort Bragg almost all of my life. Because of that, I never enlisted. Very few Army brats do. It is a regret now that I could have done my 20. My dad served 22 years, 2 tours in Nam as a chopper pilot. I saw a little old man in a truck one day with a vanity plate that read TUNLRAT. I followed him for a while, wanting to talk to him, but he got away. A tunnel rat was someone who was either crazy or fearless or both. I think you know what I mean, Slimsbob. Thanks for your service guys.

A tunnel rat was someone who was small in enough in physical stature to be able to easily crawl into the tunnels.

I agree size mattered. I only knew 2 rats personally and one of them was my first contract manager on base. He was small, but based on the stories he would tell me, fearless and crazy were a big part of it. He was in his mid 60's when I knew him and still had a cold, no fear manner about him. Went on to retire as a Sargent Major. I really miss him. Cheers to you and anyone else who had what it takes to serve.
