The Trump administration delivered an early midterms present to Democrats Thursday night when the Justice Department decided to side with 20 GOP states in a lawsuit seeking to gut the core protections of the Affordable Care Act for people with pre-existing conditions.

President Trump arrived late for the G7 meetings in Canada on Friday. He was late for the breakfast meeting on Saturday AM and left early before the meetings were half completed at Saturday midday. At most he was present for nine hours of business meetings. President Trump showed a basic lack of respect for the host country Canada and the USA largest trading partners. $600M was spent to make this meeting happen (90% was for security).

It was generally felt that President Trump was a distraction from the items of business and the remaining G6 leaders were not unhappy to see him depart.

President Trump tried to distract the G7 meetings by suggesting that Russia should be at the table. Russia was ejected from the former G8 meetings because of its annexation of Crimea and invasion of Ukraine plus continuous hostile actions. 5/6 G7 leaders out right declined President Trump's suggestion. Even Russia said they were not that interested in future participation.

President Trump was fixated on accusing Canada of 270% tariffs barriers on milk products. Wisconsin produces more milk products than all of Canada primarily due to over production/over capacity. Canada has a supply management program that works well and ensures that domestic dairy producers meets all of Canada requirements. It would cost Canada billions to eliminate these tariffs and hurt employment in the dairy industry across the country.

President Trump came across like he could simply talk foreign nations into seeing his way of the world like some sort of real estate deal.

In the end, he left the G7 meetings like a breath of hot air that accomplished almost nothing. If anything President Trump strengthened the remaining G6 leaders resolve that they must increasingly prepare themselves for a world where the USA is not a key trading partner.

The USA will always be a trading partner for the G6 economies. A growing trade partner is a different matter.

Just like the copier business, where competitive vendors close deals you never are aware of, nations can give preferential trading treatment to each other ignoring the USA. That will be one of the byproducts of this week's G6+1 (USA) meeting.

I will give you a small example. I was making a call the other day and asked a customer how the steel and aluminum tariffs would effect their business. They sell commercial marine ocean products. They primarily buy their ocean buoys from the USA. The buoys have a lot of aluminum fixtures on them. If the tariffs go through they will instead buy their buoys from Norway as they are of equal quality and will be less expensive. A win for Canada and Norway (European Union) and a loss for the USA.

Canada and the USA have the most integrated economies in the world. It is said that various major auto assemblies cross the border several times before a manufactured car can be completed and delivered to a US customer. President Trump's trade war totally does not consider this reality.

To be sure there will be no winners in this trade war. There will be job losses for both Canada and the USA but Canada is firm in its resolve not to be bullied by the USA. As long as the USA imposes tariffs on Canada, Canada will impose an equal dollar value of targeted (Trump states) counter tariffs on the USA.

On Saturday, President Trump today in a press conference upon leaving the G7 meetings in Canada when asked questions about his personal relations with the other G6 ministers rated them as an perfect 10.

On Saturday as the other G7 heads made their departing press statements, Trump turned 180 degrees and accused Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau of making false statements and said that the US will not endorse the G7 communique and then threatened new tariffs on automobiles.

Trudeau repeated that the US tariffs were very unfair to Canada, that Canada would not be making changes to its Dairy management program and that it would not accept any sunset clauses to any NAFTA agreements.

In a tweet today, Trump accused Trudeau of "being dishonest and weak". I do not think that a US President has ever accused a Canadian Prime Minister of such words.

President Trump just does not get when dealing with foreign leaders, it is not like dealing with US political figures. They are not obliged to follow your lead and they will do what is best for their country.

The great negotiator lashes out in anger when the alternate reality of a tremendously successful G7 meeting that he is spinning turns out not to be true. The transatlantic alliance has never been so split.


I suspect the same thing will happen when Trump does not get exactly what he wants when he meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next week.

Trump has set the stage for the meeting that this will be Kim's only chance to help his country gain future prosperity. Trump does not seem to realize that Kim can simply wait Trump out for 2-6 years. Eventually Trump will be term limited and gone from US politics (oh happy day!) but Kim is a Dictator for life.
