I hope there is a special place in hell for the techs that empty half a canister of WD40 on clutches to stop squeaking noises.

You may not be familiar with the machine but a long time ago IBM made some typebar typewriters that used a cork pressure clutch for the carriage return mechanism. And said clutch did tend to fail after a few years. Along comes an tech that works out of his house to tell my boss about how to clean these clutches without going through all those steps to replace it. Yeap spray the cork friction disk with wd 40. He took over for me when I had to take a week long course in NJ for some new machines. I got back and within one week I had every single one of the forty machines under contract needing that cork disk. Seems mister dimwit did not know wd40 also removed the glue holding the cork to the clutch disk. Luckily I could get a second day shipment from the parts center. And it really was not a difficult repair to replace the clutch disc. Somehow and I will never know why the few machines mister spray it with wd40 got away with spraying the machines his customers used every few days. maybe the machines were so old anyway he got away with telling them that was the only thing keeping them running because parts were no longer available, They did quit making the machines in 1975 after all.
