The allegations from Microsoft marks the first major public accusations of attempted interference by Russia in the 2018 elections.

Giuliani says he's not sure collusion is a crime despite Mueller investigation

President Donald Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said Monday that he's not sure collusion with Russia would be considered a crime.

But legal experts have repeatedly said that anyone found collaborating with Russia on the 2016 election could be charged with other crimes, such as conspiracy -- and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is ongoing.

Facebook has taken down 652 pages, accounts and groups it identified as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign that originated in Iran and targeted countries around the world. It also found a number of new pages connected to Russia.

Facebook finds disinformation campaigns run from Iran and Russia

The pages and groups spread misinformation in the US, UK, Latin America and the Middle East with over one million followers.

In a related development, Twitter announced on Tuesday that it has identified and removed 284 accounts, many of which it linked to Iran, for "coordinated manipulation." The company said it is working with law enforcement and other tech firms.
The announcements underscore just how aggressively foreign actors continue to interfere in elections around the world. Facebook's revelation came after Microsoft took control of websites it said Russian military intelligence could have tried to use to hack American politicians.

Tuesday's revelations show the problem goes beyond Russia.

"I've been saying for months that there's no way the problem of social media manipulation is limited to a single troll farm in St. Petersburg, and that fact is now beyond a doubt," said Senator Mark Warner, top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. "We also learned today that the Iranians are now following the Kremlin's playbook from 2016."

For decades, Russia and the former Soviet Union has developed an army of 15,000 workers across the globe employed in what is known as "Active Measures". These are non military state actions designed to weaken western democracies in the hopes of restoring Russia to "super power" status across the globe.

When a Russian intelligence officer is looking for an individual to flip over to their sphere of influence, they use an acronym called M.I.C.E. They seek a person who can be swayed by:

    M.oney
    I.deology
    C.omprise
    E.go

In 1984 Donald Trump sold five condos in Trump Tower to a Russian mobster linked to Putin. The NY State Attorney filed charges of money laundering.

Starting in the 1990s to 2004, Donald Trump goes through a series of bankruptcies and has a hard time raising seed capital to start new business ventures.

Top Russian businessmen (Oligarchs) with links to the Russian mob seek to invest their money abroad and the easiest way to do that is via real estate purchases, in cash. In the USA, under the Patriot Act, foreign money is only investigated when there are loans.

Russia has been laundering mob money at Trump properties across the globe for decades.

It is suggested that the main reason President Trump does not release his tax returns is that it will show a clear money trail to Russia.

If all of the claims are true, President Trump could represent the biggest national security breach in history.

Growing up on the land I've seen a couple of serious mice plagues and a couple of locus plagues.

Ever seen what happens when you pack mice into a cage?
They cannibalize each other until their is only one MICE left.
It's the innate survival instinct that drives mice into self destruction.
When there is only one mouse left you can easily stomp on it with your boot.

You can't know where the mice hide until you put out the traps.
You know the mice plague has a natural cycle and it will soon be over.
The only problem is cleaning up all the smell they leave behind.
We can't do much about the mice plague, so why stress unnecessarly over it.

Every thing has its own natural cycle....

    Nicely said.

... except powerful people will never give up on obtaining more money and ego.

I do think American politics will soon move back to the center as I think many people are tired of the daily drama.

In a pair of recent announcements, the US Justice Dept indicted seven Russian intelligence officers of criminal charges in an international hacking scheme.

Justice Dept. indicts 7 Russian intelligence officers in international hacking scheme - CNNPolitics

According to the indictment, the defendants -- all members of the GRU, a Russian Federation intelligence agency within the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian military -- engaged in a series of cyberattacks against anti-doping agencies and officials, sporting federations and more than 250 athletes in retaliation for the exposure of Russia's state-backed doping program.

Through the use of spear phishing emails, stolen credentials and other cyber intrusions, a group calling itself the "Fancy Bears' Hack Team" publicized medical information and drug testing results of athletes and peddled a false narrative that certain athletes were using performance-enhancing drugs, prosecutors alleged.

Vice President Mike Pence accused China of attempting to meddle in the US 2018 mid term elections. President Trump speaking at the UN General Assembly in Sept accused China of the same.

Pence accuses China of ‘malign’ campaign to undermine Trump ahead of congressional elections - The Globe and Mail

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence intensified Washington’s pressure campaign against Beijing on Thursday by accusing China of “malign” efforts to undermine President Donald Trump ahead of next month’s congressional elections and reckless military actions in the South China Sea.

In what was billed as a major policy address, Pence sought to build on Trump’s speech at the United Nations last week in which he accused China of trying to interfere in the vote that will determine whether his Republican Party will keep control of Congress.

Neither Trump nor Pence provided hard evidence of meddling by China, which last week rejected the president’s allegation.

Pence said China was waging a sophisticated effort to sway the elections against the Republicans in retaliation for Trump’s trade policies. He vowed to continue to expose Beijing’s “malign influence and interference.”

Pence said Beijing, with an eye not only to the congressional elections but also to Trump’s 2020 re-election bid, had “mobilized covert actors, front groups, and propaganda outlets to shift Americans’ perception of Chinese policies” and was targeting its tariffs to hurt states where Trump has strong support.

“China wants a different American president,” Pence said.

The allegations, however, have raised questions as to whether Trump and his aides are trying to deflect attention from an investigation of his campaign’s possible ties to Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and also set up China for blame if Republicans do poorly in November’s vote.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement that Pence in his speech had made “unwarranted accusations ... and slandered China by claiming that China meddles in U.S. internal affairs and elections.”

Daniel Russel, Washington’s top diplomat for East Asia until last year, said there was a lot to dislike about China’s behavior. But he said the claim that China was working to defeat Trump at the ballot box “rings hollow” and the approach could be counterproductive.

“Even if you accept all of Pence’s complaints at face value, it’s hard to make the case that the administration’s Cold War-style vilification of China will be effective or beneficial to U.S. interests, since it’s clearly pushing Beijing to intransigence, not compromise.”

Homeland Security secretary says there have been no known foreign attacks on election infrastructure.

    Great news!

At a cybersecurity event on Friday morning, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said that the department has seen "continued attempts" to access election-related systems.

The attempts were all “quickly prevented or mitigated," she said, and the few that did succeed to gain access have not been attributed to a foreign country. She quickly said people could be trying to access personal information such as social security numbers, which isn't necessarily related to the elections.

"If you talk to a bank or you talk to somebody in the energy infrastructure, we are under constant attack," Nielsen said. "I can't stress that enough."

"What would be strange is if we didn't see any attempts... So as of today, we do not have any activity that we're attributing on the election infrastructure to a foreign entity."
