Nike vs Trump. Who will win?

Over the Labour Day weekend, one of the biggest controversies families debated over their summer BBQ's was Nike's decision to centrally promote the controversial former American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick as a key figure in their new "Dream Big" ad campaign which airs opening telecast of the NFL's new football season.

The TV ad and billboard campaign is sure to be seen my many millions of NFL fans.

Kaepernick is the dark skin NFL player who started kneeling in protest against black injustice in America during the playing of the USA national Anthem. This action was soon imitated by many other players. This caused quite a sustained uproar over many months that eventually irked President Trump so much that spoke out against it many times.

A few Nike fans have decided to burn their shoes and cut up their Nike gear in protest.

A high % of black Americans are very loyal Nike buyers and many black sports and entertainment celebrities support Kaepernick.

"Trump criticized Nike this week for using Kaepernick in the campaign. In an Oval Office interview with the Daily Caller on Tuesday, Trump said of Nike: “I think it’s a terrible message that they’re sending, and the purpose of them doing it, maybe there’s a reason for them doing it, but I think as far as sending a message, I think it’s a terrible message and a message that shouldn’t be sent. There’s no reason for it.”

    The NFL responded.

The Nike ad also prompted the NFL to comment positively on a player with whom it is in litigation.

“The National Football League believes in dialogue, understanding and unity. We embrace the role and responsibility of everyone involved with this game to promote meaningful, positive change in our communities,” Jocelyn Moore, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications and public affairs, said in a Tuesday statement. “The social justice issues that Colin and other professional athletes have raised deserve our attention and action.”

Do you support Kaepernick or will Trump need yet another controversy heading into the November mid term elections only 10 weeks away?

trump took Kaepernik's protest, which was against police injustice against visible minorities, and turned it into a protest against the flag and anthem. He either didn't understand what the protest was truly about or he simply wanted to rile up his base.
Nike is doing this because they believe they will sell more shoes. I don't believe they are doing it because of any social conscience.

Marketing research group Apex, claims that the buzz around the new Nike ad campaign has already created $163.5 million in brand exposure on TV, print and social media.

Nike's Colin Kaepernick ad created $163.5 million in media exposure

Some have praised Nike for taking a stand on a social issue. Younger consumers, especially millennials and Gen Z, are demanding more of this from brands. Others have chastised Nike, prompting the hashtag #NikeBoycott to trend on Twitter.
Apex found $49.1 million of Nike's brand exposure was negative, $48.8 million was neutral and $65.6 million was positive, totaling $163.5 million overall. The campaign is for Nike's 30th anniversary of "Just Do It."

    Is this for real...?
Sounds a bit like Shoey from the Warner Bros movie: "The Tail that wag the Dog", with Dustin Hoffman. Watch the full movie "Wag The Dog " and garner a real perspective on mass media hysteria.

Any one throwing their shoes over the power lines yet?

Re: Nike vs Trump. Who will win?

Fox News is publishing a lot of content these last few days attacking the Nike ad featuring Colin Kaepernick. Perhaps seeking a diversion from all of the bad things happening in Trump world these days.

Between Sunday and Wednesday of last week, product orders rose 27% for Nike, the world's largest shoe manufacturer, according to Edison Trends, a digital commerce researcher. In the same period last year, product orders fell 2%.

Nike's online sales surge in days after Kaepernick ad debut

Nike has recently signed a 10 year deal with the NFL to exclusively supply football shoes to the NFL. When NFL players start wearing Nike/ Kaepernick shoes on the field as a form of silent protest against racial injustice in the USA things are going to get complicated and it puts the NFL in a tough spot to navigate.

Certainly, Nike's move is a business strategy that among other things is trying to capitalize on a growing consumer desire to support corporations that are more socially conscious.

Nike is also in the business of attracting big name athletes to promote it's brand. This new ad campaign helps advance those goals as many, many professional athletes across all sports side with Nike on this debate.

The anthem/ flag/ kneeling issue seems to be mostly a controversy for the NFL and its audience. For the NBA, which has a much different audience than the NFL, where most players side with Kaepernick, there has been no issue.
