    Change of pace

Can't say I'm confident Obama can make a difference, but something had to give. I was for Bush until he turned his back on Afghanistan to attack Iraq. Didn't take long before I realized that we were in for one of the worst administrations in recorded history. History will prove that in time, but the financial disaster we're facing is a repeat of the neocon driven Savings and Loan scandal under Reagan. You remember that - the feds relaxed the rules to make the fat cats happy and they raped and pillaged the Savings and Loan industry. Bush's appointees did the same for the big boys on Wall Street and here we are - screwed again.

Like I said, Obama may not be able to turn things around, but four more years of pandering to the fat cats while giving it to the middle class - not my idea of a smart move. 53% of the voters agreed with me. Let's hope we made a good choice.

    Rants from a female perspective.

We need to return to a time when Presidents actually came from the populous, individuals who held real jobs in the real world. Our Presidents today have great educations in Liberal Colleges and then go straight into politics, with maybe a short stint in the military. They go from one idealistic dream world into another, never having lived in the real world.

I find it so amazing with our ability to record history, that we can't learn from it.

Nationalized Healthcare??? Look at the other agencies run by the government and see how efficient they are.

Socialism, Communism, when have they ever worked to benefit the common person?

When has bigger government ever given people a better life with greater freedom and opportunity?

When has robbing from the rich to give to the poor ever worked, except in a fairy tale involving Friar Tuck...

This last election I really hoped a third party would emerge...
Oh, Well we have an Obama-Nation now

    David1972:
You're conveniently forgetting about the Repub attempts to limit some of the abuse on wall street, which was blocked by the dems. Did Bush and the conservatives push hard enough? No. Was the Bush - Pelosi bailout the right thing to do? No way. Is there anybody anywhere that doesn't already pay enough in taxes? Nope.

It's not that 53% of american voters want more liberal policies (look at California Prop 8) it's that too many people are sick of the so called conservatives being as irresponsible as the liberals. Case In Point: Voters distrust 'diluted' GOP (OneNewsNow.com)

    Misinformation

Sorry, but me thinks you are ill informed. The SEC oversight comittee, chaired by a Republican appointed by Bush, authorized the raising of the debt limit for Wall Street's big five. In exchange, the SEC was given an oversight ability they didn't have before, but failed to act on it. Since the committee is staffed by both Republicans and Democrats, it was clearly a bi-partisan failure.

The Bush people have done everything they can to deregulate business in any and all forms, which was the primary cause of the Savings and Loan scandal under Reagan. It took decades to put reasonable regulations in place to prevent overreaching by Wall Street. In 2004 the SEC rescinded several key regulations, including allowing the big five to exceed their debt limits. The big five players used this relief to build a house of cards with exotic instruments, such as deriviatives. They key players walked away with billions, leaving the small players and the American taxpayer holding the bag.

Did various experts and Congressmen warn of the impending collapse? Yes. Both Republican and Democrats. Was the bail out a good idea? No. Should the key players in this fiasco, including the SEC heads who allowed this to happen, face criminal charges? Most assurdely. But, like in the Savings and Loan scandal, only a token few will pay any price at all while the big players will continue to collect their bonuses and stock options and golden parachutes.

Yes and similarly ineffective (but better than nothing) legislation was blocked by house dems during the Clinton administration. Not that either side did much other than throw money at the problem, but there was a small group of republicans with an alternative plan - sell Govt insurance for the upside down loans, but let the fat cats take the fallout. I still don't hear investigation/prosecution, but personal accountability is an alien and abhorrent concept to liberals.

    Congressional failure

From what I've read, the problems began even before Clinton, but yes, the dem leadership blocked what may have been a reasonable plan under Clinton. Getting the Gov't to insure investments isn't something I'd go for.

That said, if the SEC had allocated resources for the oversight function granted them by the big five, it is possible the SEC (and Congress) would have given more weight to the looming crisis. Not that they would have done anything to head it off. Everybody was making a killing on the stock market.

While granting the waver to increase debt limit was a carefully orchestrated move by the big players to rape and pillage (with the approval of the Bush neocons) it is Congress that is ultimately to blame for the oversight failure. Lots of blame to go around. As I told my brother, a Rush Limbaugh dittohead, you can't hang the whole thing on the democrats.

    Sux all the way around

No - the elephants are just as derelict in their duty if not more so - they are supposed to be "conservative"

But it's Obama who just appointed one of the Fannie Kingpins to his cabinet. Why? To serve as a bad example???

Don't you remember, the S&L mess in the 80's was all Carter's fault.

    Give me a break!

    Let's be clear.

The press, the Democratic party and everyone who hates him will insure that everything will be yoked to the shoulders of George W. Bush till bout the year 2525.(Remember the song?)

The press would have comitted simultaneous suicide had John McCain won that election. Not that there was any danger of that cause he might as well have been Bob Dole up against Bill Clinton.
