"Why the Future Doesn't Need Us"

Bill Joy's cover story on the dangers posed by developments in genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics ("Why the Future Doesn't Need Us," Wired 8.04) struck a deep cultural nerve. Instantly.

Literally within hours of its appearance, reactions began arriving via email, fax, and phone from all parts of the globe. In The New York Times and The Washington Post, Joy's essay was recognized as a landmark publishing event, a judgment affirmed by countless online publications, newspapers, magazines, and television networks in America and abroad. The Times of London reported that the article "is being compared to Einstein's 1939 letter to President Roosevelt alerting him to the possibility of a nuclear bomb." read more

This question is rather actual today. Thanks for your mind so many years ago.

The most significant statement I read in Bill Joys article.Make it global wide law that each "person/s" who creates their wrongful technology be the person/s that are completely liable and punishable for its release or stolen released into public domain. You create the monster you carry it with a life long ball and chain of financial and physical pain.Sent via phone.

well having seen how SOME people run their "printer/copier" company .. after 31+ in the field and had "tech burn-out" with the last crook I worked for..

I DOUBT when I feel like going employed again.. it will b in the tech field even tho I keep somewhat up with the times.

but it is true... a TRUE Trained copier/printer is on the outs.

Re: "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us"

Looks like my mobile phone might be hacked......... Java script error or something.

Every time this week I've post from my mobile phone to CTN I see that the relevant forum has been magically rated with a full 5 stars. I see that random unprintable chars(=spaces) are showing up on some of my reply posts text. Random unprintable chars is how hackers force a webpage to fault and then redirect to their website for further overlay ,java or com module hacks.

I've seen that happen with CTN posts a while ago.
I've scanned my phone for viruses but nothing shows up.

I noticed that when I log onto CTN with my mobile phone, I get a null empty phone call on my home land line 10mins later, the caller doesn't answer or reply. I get the most joyous satisfaction from rubbing the phone between my butt cheeks while the unknown caller is on the other end.
...yes I clean the phone after.....

I'm too lazy to write code from my mobile phone to track down where the hack is coming from. I'm almost certain its via wifi, I've seen so many external IP address connections to the network that the net nearly slows down with DOS.

Oh! well, same sh!t different day, as they say.....
