I thought I was gonna be a copier tech when I hired on(Lanier), but then my boss told me I'm a "Territory Manager" which is sorta like being a tech 'cuz you still gotta fix stuff, but you also get screamed at by customers a lot because you got 25 calls on your board and it takes you 3 days to get there, then you get screamed at by the boss because your getting screamed at by customers.

Then I looked at my job title and discovered I was a CSR - Customer Service Representative. I thought about this for a while, and I was still fixin' stuff and getting screamed at so I didn't think it made any difference until I heard my redneck neighbor say he was going to borrow a bull to 'service' his cows, and things made a lot more sense.

I got tired of getting screamed at for getting screamed at and told the boss to go 'service' himself about the same time the company got bought out. I stuck around under the new boss - I still got screamed at, but after all the hot air rushed out of his head he would actually help.

Then I got promoted (renamed) to TSE - Technical Service Engineer, which is the same damn thing, but sounds more tech-ish (Sanitation Engineer??!) I guess they finally recognized my talents with a paper clip, hot soldering iron, and tube of J B Weld. I wish they would have put the recognition into my paycheck instead of my job title.

Then I got renamed again to TSS - Technical Service Specialist. I guess I have to put away my paperclips and superglue - I'm not an Engineer anymore, I'm just 'Special.' Most mental cases are...

I think the title above my avatar says it best - Toner Turd.

BTW the pic is my daughter on her 1st birthday. I also got a boy that just turned 10. They're the reason I keep doing this. Maybe I'm not a tech - I'm a Dad and I got mouths to feed and college to pay for...

Both tech & owner. After 15 years of doing all the work (repairs, part ordering, deleveries, sales, & customer relations, I said to hell with it & struck out on my own. Why bust ass to make a boss rich who doesn't appreciate you, doesn't understand about the repairs, & just likes to complain. After taking a whole lot of customers with me, after 3 years I work my own hours, make twice as much, decide which customers I want & sell only the models that actually work so that I can make good money on the maintenance. Life finally is good. (& no, it wasn't easy getting started, but worth it in the long run)

Service Geek, even more importantly, there's only 8 more 7-11's left in MD that I haven't had a cup of coffee from.
I know what I know better than anyone else knows what I know.
