It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.
I'm not entirely sure what that is, but as those bands appear when the space station is filming night I think you're right about the upper atmosphere. Based on the one scene where the sun was breaching the curve of the earth, I'm of the opinion that the band is somewhat similar to what you see at twilight, the sun is still below the horizon, but is close enough that some of the light still reflects off one of the atmospheric layers. But I'm no rocket scientist, so take that with a grain of salt.
This is how I get woke in the morning. I think blackcat will relate...

I've been engrossed with a minor Youtube celebrity lately. He goes by the moniker of the LA Beast, and he's a competitive eater; not the standard variety "I can eat 50 hot dogs in 5 minutes" competitive eater, but the crazy "can I eat 3 dozen whole raw eggs?" (Shell included) kind of crazy.
He chugged das boot full of olive oil, ate whole lemons, tried some of the hottest peppers in the world (including the currently unranked chocolate bhutlah pepper).
His video collection can all be found here. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDZ...h-ws7ZSZZ8DKeg

Most of the 'glow' in the atmosphere is not Aurora Borealis (or Australis in the south) but airglow: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airglow
Aurorae appear as discreet bands that look like curtains billowing in the wind. I have been fortunate to catch and photograph some instances of Aurora Australis in my life so far.

I'm not sure where I found this, it might have been CTN; if you scroll quickly, it's dizzying (don't try this if on drugs ).
