The idea was to create something that would test common sense, not logic.

How many times in any Multiple Guess test has an instructor said " Read the whole question."?

These were sent to me from my 79 year young Mom to test my ability.

    I missed 2.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

So, common sense and logic are different - sort of like 'street smarts' verses 'book smarts'. Are we going to keep that separate then, or combine them to get a best answer?
BTW - you're Mom must be a hoot!.

I came to it by a different path:
    12-2=10
    30-12=18 18-10=8
    56-18=26 26-18=8
    90-56=34 34-26=8 34+8=42
    90+42=132

That's too much algebra, my way is more abstract.

    Nice logic attempt.
I followed your logic flow right up to where 56-18 = 26.
    I realise it was just a typo, 56-30 = 26.
I like your concluded assumption by using 8....

Sorry if I have digress the intent of your post.
You'll find though that a few of the threads I put forward will rely very much on the common sense theme.
I did ask first if any body wanted any similar challenges to have a go at.

FYI. I'm no expert at brain teasers. Alot of the puzzles and challenges I know of came from the local paper, work associates, books or the internet. I like the odd challenge or two. I have some hard cryptic one that take days even weeks to solve.
BTW All credit to your Mom she quite awake for 79....

    Re: Good common sense test.

    For those who like riddles:

When I am full I can point the way.
When I am empty nothing moves all day.
When in view I have two skins,
for the one without, matchs the one within.

    The answer :
    I am a glove. (I prefer condom)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Count the Question:

How many letters are in the one-word answer to this very question.

    The answer is : Four.
There is 4 letters in the word four.
No other number has the same count of letters to it own name.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A man jumps out of an airplane at 5000ft above the ground.
When he looked up, he saw a large hole in his parachute.
He did NOT use his reserve chute , no one gave him any assistance during the descent.

Why was he able to land safely on the ground ?

    The answer : (straight logic)
All parachutes have a vent or spill hole at the top of their canopy.
The vent hole maintains a stable air flow through the chute and prevents it from collapsing.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Number Facts:

What number comes next in the series ?
    2,12,30,56,90,?

    The answer: = 132
The series follows a simple rule :
    1 x 2 = 2
    3 x 4 = 12
    5 x 6 = 30
    7 x 8 = 56
    9 x 10 = 90
    11 x 12 = (132)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Ten prefex letters to spell out the mystery(?)word.

    F-cleft
    I-spy
    G-string
    U-boat
    R-months
    A- bomb
    T-junction
    I-beam
    V-neck
    E-layer

Hint: for the last one think global....

The answer to this puzzle is the word : Figurative

The E-layer is the ionisphere layer where radio communictions are most effective.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

A ballbearing is dropped into four glass jars.
In which jar will the ball travel the SLOWEST...?
    1.Jar of Water @ 20degF
    2.Jar of Milk @ 40degF
    3.Jar of Oil @60degF
    4.Jar of Tar @80degF

The answer : (Tricks fahrenheit and celicus)
Water at 20deg Fahrenheit (-5.5 degC) is frozen ice.
The ballbearing would move slowest as the ice melted in the jar.
