To prevent oxidation of the metal, and to preserve the elasticity of the rubber seal, wipe the rubber seal with vegetable oil after cleaning, and before sealing up the cooker. We've had the same pressure cooker for 25+ years. We did purchase a seal kit a few years back, but not for the ring seal. The black plug in the lid was failing to seal, and not building pressure. =^..^=

I actually use vegetable oil as a lubricant on the lid seal every time prior to locking down the lid on the pot.
I feel the propellant in the pressure pack can of vegetable oil is probably causing the problem.
The propellant must be a very thin hydrocarbon base oil because it turns the Lid seal to something like chewing gum within 12-18 months.
Only light viscosity oil like brake fluid/WD40 is able to penetrate into rubber an do those kinds of softening reactions.

I'm thinking of making a new Lid seal out of silicone rubber. Silicone will resist heat up to 500degC. Silicone melts around 1400degC or there abouts.

restarting this thread that Igi started because I thought it was fun.

Made a killer pot roast in the crock pot this weekend as it was a nasty rainy day here in southern New England, nothing fancy just a nice chuck roast some carrots and potatoes onions and some spices. 8 hours on low and the meat was so tender it almost fell of the fork. sorry vegans I could never give this stuff up.
