SC186-00 on Metis series - what I found today

This was my first time seeing this code on any machine, and after reading the daunting service manual entry on the SC and finding pretty much no information on it on CTN, I decided to report my findings so that future techs who run into this can hopefully get it resolved a little faster. This code was on an MPC4503, but would probably be the same on any machine with a single-pass DF.

Specifically, my symptom was this: Power machine on, J001 misfeed in ARDF. Open and close door, misfeed goes away and immediately returns. On the third time it pops the code.

    Service manual says for SC186:

    CIS LED error
    During initialization:
§ The ratio between the average values of leading-edge area
and rear-edge area is out of specification.
§ Shading data peak value is below specification.
    During scanning:
§ Shading data peak value is below specification.
    Details:
    During initialization:
§ Occurs when one out of two CIS LEDs is malfunctioning,
causing the difference between the average values of
leading-edge area and rear-edge area to be large (CIS LED
    error detection).
§ Occurs when both of the CIS LEDs are malfunctioning
(unlit), causing the shading data peak value to be extremely
    low (CIS white level adjustment).
    During scanning:
§ Occurs when both of the CIS LEDs are malfunctioning
(unlit), causing the shading data peak value to be extremely
low (CIS scan control, gray balance
    adjustment/confirmation).
§ The first and second consecutive occurrences of each
constitute initial/feed jams. The third occurrence constitutes
    an SC.
(An initialization jam/transport jam occurs on 2 continuous
occasions during either initialization or transport, and on the 3rd
continuous occasion, an SC is generated)
    During initialization:
§ One or two out of two CIS LEDs are defective
    During scanning:
§ Both of the CIS LEDs are defective.
    Service Call 101-195
    SM 5-19 D146/D147/D148/D149/D150
    Troubleshooting
    SC No. Level Error Name/Error Condition/Major Cause/Solution
    1. Reconnect the power/signal harness.
    2. Replace the following parts:
§ Replace the CIS and CIPB.
§ Replace the CIS background white roller.
    § Replace the power/signal harness.
§ Replace the ADF main control board.

I called Ricoh on it and all the guy on the phone did was read the service manual, then tell me to replace the very first thing it listed (CIS and CIPB). The issue was that there was a LOT of gunk on the rear slit glass, accessible from the underside of the ARDF. Don't order parts, guys. Clean that glass and your problem should resolve immediately.

If anyone else has information on this, or maybe some different symptoms/scenarios where they've encountered it, I'd love to hear from you.

Cleaning the glass has always been the first step in trouble shooting CIS and back side image quality on SPDF models. Also, depending on the model, clean the reference plate/roller for the CIS. I have seen machines with a roller where one of the roller springs has come off and caused side to side image variations.

Re: SC186-00 on Metis series - what I found today

Metis is not covered in Goose's Guide. From Goose's Guide for the C6501/C7501 and the MP 9001:

SC 186 CIS error Check and reseat cn210 and 220 on adf main pcb
SC 186 CIS LED error - CIS defective
SC 186 Harness from CN 210 to CIS pinched on frame ,repair and reroute.
There are 3 cables connected to the CIS unit. The harnesses connected to cn 210 and cn 220 are the two smaller ones the go to the ADF main board. Inspect both them for damage and reconnect them at both ends. If both harnesses are good and reconnecting them does not clear the problem, the only other option is replacing the CIS unit. The one used for the C6501 and MP 4002 is a different part number and costs $1195.85 from Ricoh. I had one go out on a MP 9001 yesterday. Luckily I have a C6501 parts machine that I was able to take one from.

Just had this problem, went and checked CIS Glass in ADf, cleaned gunk off it and closed cover and the machine worked
