    update...its fixed...
    we jumped to conclusions.
    It was the HDD
    (the machine we bought had a 120gig 7200 rpm HDD)
    We replaced it with a 120gig SSD drive we had in our truck
    the machine requires a 160gig 5400 rpm HDD.

    it was the HDD.
