Java VM card is required. The 4001/5001 comes with the VM card as standard but check that it is installed and functioning properly. The card reader will most like require an App in order to work. PaperCut is your best place to contact to make sure that you have everything needed, that it is supported on this model and that it is installed correctly.

with papercut there is a config file that has to be edited with the ip of the server and the device and then zipped and loaded to the mfp extended features before papercut and the machine will recognize the card reader. BTDT................

Sounds to me like that was not done correctly.

I've not worked with PaperCut but knew it was a VM app.

It is a VM app and it does require java to be running............ Had a sales rep send an mp 401 to a collage to eval PC, the standard 401 does not have java and requires a HDD and Memory plus the VM card to run java................................

Did you try to disable/enable usb in sp mode ?
I had to do this once for a card reader ( i even changed it thinking it was broken )
