I just thought of this: Quite a while back we had a mpc300 that was taking out drums, and I could find no cause for it after hours of troubleshooting. I finally grasped at a straw and filtered through the toner running through he machine and found super hard chunks of contaminant in the K toner (the chunks didn't look like toner, but tiny pieces of plastic. Cleaned the old toner out and cycled new toner from a different lot# and the issue was resolved.

I plan on putting a new toner cartridge in with the drum. This machine feeds toner directly to the drum cartridge from the toner unit. None remains inside the machine.

    Speaking of grasping at straws.
I notice "toner collection coil breakage" is mentioned in the June firmware update.
Could the collection coil be contacting the drum?
Or waste toner packing up at one end of the drum?
We recently sold a bunch of SP3610 and SP4510 to one customer so I'm curious to see if they start failing & what the solution is for the MP401.

I ripped the drum cartridge from the previous failure apart and the toner collection coil was in one piece. I'm pretty sure the solution will be throwing it in the gorram river.

I go for the clounged toner:
Does customer shakes the toner well before placing it in machine?
Perhaps he stores toner on a heating device, so toner get clounged in the bottle easily?
Were those 2 lines on the earlier pcu's on exact the same location as now?
Also I think the thought of Mika is interesting: Chunks of metal, plastic,... in the pcu.
But how does it gets there?
Some customers shake the toner bottle when near end pops up, maybe this one shakes the black pcu?
    You never now these days...

I have been told that this model has been discontinued. If so, could that be due to these issues with the drums?

Ricoh just announced it's sucessor the mp402, but they take the same drum cartridge number.
