Usually the hdd would fit onto the controller board. If it's the hdd only then yes you can use different brands. I use the blue western digital hdd's.

The controller main boards are model specific and can't see those being compatible

My assumption is that he's referring to the board that plugs into the HDD, and then connected to the Controller (but I may be mistaken).
It's the same across multiple Machines

Do you mean the control board placed on the HDD?
If so, the circuit board must be for the same series HDD. Normally the same size as well. I have replaced boards in the same series, but with different size - that have worked.

Sometimes I had to format the HDD before use.

Know there are companies that sell these boards online, and on E-bay, and so on...
Usually we just swap the drive for a new one. We used different brands of HDDs.

from what i ve seen where i buy a machine and the customer has taken out the HD,as long as you got the cables to connect you
can buy a replacement drive via amazon or ebay, even when the mounting bracket is missing i made it work.

Older machines use IDE hard drives and the newer ones use SATA hard drives so there is at least two versions of that board.

    Of course.
I said multiple machines, not all machines.
And he asked about 2 specific ones that it is interchangable
