    Ricoh MPC2051 Scan to email

I have a Ricoh MPC 2051 that is about 4 years old and about two weeks ago the scan to emai stopped working. I have spent several hours on the phone with Ricoh tech support and they have also sent out a technician to our office and they can not figure it out. the machine will send a scanned document every four or five times. Ricoh is telling me it is my network or our internet provider Comcast. i have spoken with Comcast and Port 25 is open like Ricoh wants and nothing else has changed. Just seems weird that if i try to scan a document and choose the email address it will fail but if i keep doing it on the forth or fifth try it will go through.

    Few things to try:

Has anything changed on the network side? New router etc. Are you scanning to a hostname or IP? If hostname, change to IP. DNS might be a bit flaky. Plug a laptop into the port the 2051 is connected to and do a ping on the email server's hostname with a -t. Look for dropped packets. Might indicate a port / switch / network issue.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

Re: Ricoh MPC2051 Scan to email

I have a few customers in Colorado with the same problem. The problem is that Comcast limits the connectivity on non SSL email connections. If you have several computers on the network only one at a time may send a message. This is due to abuse they have seen on their email server. The problem is the copier wants to make a connection to test connectivity then makes a second connection right after to send the message. The best way around this is to set up SSL SMTP. I am not sure if your if your copier is able to use SSL or not check by going into System/File Transfer/SMTP and look for Use Secure Connection. If it is there then you can use SSL to connect and the problems should go away. Alternatively you can set up a Gmail account to use, if you have SSL.

I have many MPC2051's using gmail to scan & they all work fine. You may need to update the firmware first if the tech didnt do it while he was on site, however he should have done as he was troubleshooting your issue.

If you use gmail, you have to use one their non SSL options. They have a support document that tells you how to do so. There are restrictions.

If you are using Go Daddy, try port 80 instead of port 25.

SMTP2go Provides a free smtp server that supports non-ssl over port 2525 or 8025
I set it up all the time for clients. Works great. Never an issue

I'm pretty sure that SMTP2Go only allows 25 messages per day for free.

Very inexpensive to add more, but not free.

The (Free service) limit has recently been increased to 24/hour or 1000/month, which is more than sufficient for most of my clients
