OCR is not available on that model.

It's only available on the newest ones, and is an option that must be purchased. FWIW, I've heard it does not perform very well.

You will need a software application to OCR.

I sure hope the customer was never promised that his machine had it.

On those machines that do support it, after the document is scanned to the HDD, it is then processed by the MFP for recognizable text. The OCR text is then added to the document as an additional layer. The scanned file is not sent until all processing is finished. I have heard of 5 to 6 pages documents taking 30 minutes or more to process.

There are a TON of ways to go, along with a very wide range of prices.

It will depend on just what the customer wants, and how much work they are willing to do to get the docs OCRed.

Buy a GOOD piece of OCR software and set up the MFP to scan in TIFF format to a "watch" folder that the software can process from on the PC document server. Minimum scan resolution 300 DPI in B&W, TIFF format.
