The only people who will really know are the designers of the machines.

The machines run on netbsd. Maybe they have different versions with different memory requirements. Maybe they added the extra ram for faster processing of something.

If you want to be a guinea pig and see if added ram does anything go ahead, I expect nothing will happen, with the machine not working at all or working worse as the next likely occurrence.

As slimslob said it could simply be due to cost savings due to 2gb sticks being more available than 1gb sticks.
