Check operation of paper lift. If the paper lift sensor gets activated too soon, as paper is fed, the level of the top sheet can get to the point where the pick up roller is not in contact before the lift sensor has activated to turn the lift motor back on. I have seen this caused by warped lift pan and by there being 5 or more sheets of paper with corners bent under there by lifting the back corner of the paper, where the lift sensor is, higher than the center of the paper where the feed is.
