Hi all,

Manual says “Paper guide home position motor error” however I dont know which “paper guide” it is referring to, any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Good mate.
I understand according to the extended expectations of the error, that a problem occurs with the stapler motor. Check the classifier's pads, prior to stapling the pages, check if the rotation / trallect of the "stapler motor" moves correctly.
If all these parts move normally, check sensors, dust or dirt can generate false jams.
I await your reply.
According to the manual my code SC721-81 has nothing to do with the staple unit.
"SC721-81 B Paper Guide Drive Motor Error• During movement to home, the home position could not be detected
within a predetermined pulse (1st time is jam notification, 2nd time is
SC notification).
• During movement from home, the home position was detected for
longer than a predetermined pulse (1st time is jam notification, 2nd
time is SC notification)."

According to my manual on Code 721-81, it indicates to me in extended information, the following:
• Overcurrent (-03 only)
• Staple jam (-44 only)
• Encoder error (-11, -11, -25, -44)
• Defective motor
• Connector disconnected or loose
• Motor overload
• Defective initial position sensor
• Defect of the paper surface sensor (-70 only)
Check if the SC occurs when opening / closing covers and in the
checking inputs / outputs. If the SC appears again, take
complete the following steps. Check if the SC appears again
turning the machine off and on after each step.
• The lens parts are the motor and the initial position sensor
related in which the SC was produced.
1. Check if the connector of the lens part is correct
connected. Reconnect the connector if it is disconnected or
loosened
2. Check the wire harness for the lens piece. Replace
the wiring harness if it is disconnected or damaged.
3. Check if the motor works, the sensors turn off and
they light, they do not have overloads and they operate correctly.
Replace the parts if there are defects.
4. Check for signs of short circuit. Replace parts if
There are flaws.

I have had this and it's a stupid code cause of the stupid designers in Japan trying to be way to clever.
Every time you print a document a set of black fingers on each side of the sponge rollers comes out to assist the paper coming out in a straight path on the shift tray only.
The stupid designers have now decided to put a clear set of mylars on the top side of these black fingers to be absolute idiots.
Anyway these mylars are shaped like a tip of a lizards tongue and they bend back and seize the fingers from going in and out causing the above service code.
The motor located to drive these fingers is at the front side of the finisher under the shift tray and parallel to the staple unit when in its home position.
Turn the motor which has a little belt on it to its limit which will expose these fingers and rip the mylars off both fingers cause they will give jam code 159 as well, in fact rip them off every finisher you go to cause I will guarantee you, every single tech will be going to every single machine with this finisher after around 40 thousand prints and having the exact same problem.
Thank you Ricoh for making all of your newer finishers with sheet metal so thin that everything gets deformed/bent out of shape just by breathing on them.
The Paper guide drive motor and home pos sensor are inside the front door underneath one of the upper plastic covers see pics.SR 3220.pdf
That code has to do with the shift tray area so it's a mystery to me why you can't pull out the lower booklet/stitch assembly. Something obviously must be stuck inside interfering with the home position movement. Imprestik may be onto something with the mylars. I'm sure by now you've removed all the covers to try and see what's interfering with home position and also stopping the stitch unit from opening.

Actually, if you look in black square in the margin............that is the combined manual for both the booklet and the non booklet which I posted. As far as I can tell that code has nothing to do with the booklet portion of the finisher.
Good luck with that finisher and let us know when you find the fix.
