    MP C4503 sc324-05

Working with a MP C 4503 that continues to give the sc324-05. This tells me the color developer drive unit is locking. There appears to be 2 motors for the developer units. 1 for K and 1 for the CMY. Anyone come across this before? Are there drive clutches for the color units? The developer boxes turn easily by hand, and the units spin up when machine is powered on. Copier will print and copy in black, but when asked to print in color, gives code.

A motor lock error does not mean the motor is locking. It means the the motor is not able to achieve the proper constant speed, ie speed lock. Could be the motor, a bind in the gear train or a bind in a development unit.

Gotta be that one of those color dev. units is bound up (even though you say they spin freely). Generally that's where we get this code from. Has the machine been sitting in storage for a while? Does it make any whining/grinding type noises? Have seen where development unit gears don't get put back on during re-assembly. Have also seen the development gear (on rear frame of machine) broken. Usually though, it's one of the development units being at fault. What are the counts on dev. units?

There is a TSB for this problem. It basically says its due to improper transportation and to rotate the gears to agitate the developer. Not sure if this is relevant to your problem. Just letting you know.

I saw that TSB. Machine has been in an office in use daily for about a year. I also ckecked developer motor for color dev boxes. Motors turn fine. Sometimes the code pops up right after machine comes ready and before any activity takes place. I swapped PCDU’s with another machine and still code popped up. Thanks. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thats great that you have a machine to swap parts, I would try the motor that drives the units next.

I swapped the entire developer/drum drive unit and now have a happy machine and customer. Not sure what part in the D.U. is bad. I will save that tear down for a slow day. Thanks to everyone who made a contribution, it is always helpful.

Did you replace the drum/dev unit itself or a drive unit in back of the machine?
