i tested in 3 machines and all do the same.
Something dirty in the optics, DF glass probably, does it do it when scan off glass.

lock the direcion of line
ADF registration. Change the registration or magnification (like bump magnification to like 102%) and see if it changes. Pretty classic problem for the A4 size devices.

is only in scanner and the appears only in some pages.
It's catching the edge of the paper on the way out, when in color mode it picks up the shadow as blue. Change the registration a little each way till the line goes away. Registration will be off a little bit (1-2 mm) but the line will go away. Or just change magnification slightly larger to run the line off the page so to speak. I've never seen it personally on a 501 but have seen it more times than I can count on the SP5210, MPC 400 style scanner.

Not familiar with this box, but on other machines if the scanner glass is installed upside down or backwards, adf reg/feed issues will ensue.
