An old C3500 unit is starting to place a smudge on the right side of pages. Usually only the first few pages of the day and then it seems to clear up. See attached PDF scan of what I'm talking about. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to fix this or is a new black drum needed?

if your are a tech should be able to resolve problem. If a customer i would said but a whole black PCU assy to make sure not pass end of life on drum and developer unit. To see if drum is bad will need to pull black pcu assy and see if marks on drum. i read post again sounds like drum blade failing.

The problem is not the blade. If it were, the problem would get worse as the day progressed, not go away. The problem is that the drum surface is not taking a full charge initially. You might be able to get an extra week or so by cleaning the charge roller though if you do not know what you are doing, you can do more damage than help. Bottom line, replace the PCU as the lube bar is probably also shot.

Those machines had fusers that when the belt started losing its coating this type of copy quality occurred. Only takes a second to pull fuser and flip it to see.
It's only black smudges that show up - none of the other colours do this. Could it still be the fuser as you mention above or would you now suspect the black PCU?
Black PCU or even the developer. Need to check history on both and replace if necessary.
Instead of running b/w do an individual color and copy something,cyan,magenta.
i think sp5618 has to be set to 0 for individual color select.
If you still get smudging i would concur fuser unit.
If it is a black drum/dev issue you need to know how to take them apart..it isnt like changing a wiper blade on your car..
