I just wanted to give you big props myself for this info . Understanding that SSL is a problem, I've been reading posts, and screwing with all kinds of different configs for a LONG time, trying to get some of these machines to scan to email, and this finally solved my problem...thanks for the advice!

Downloaded emailrelay from SourceForge, setup on desktop pc in the office, and brought Ricoh copier/scanner email capability back to life.

    E-MailRelay | SourceForge.net

emailrelay is easy to configure, has light memory footprint, runs as a service, and works beautifully. It mimics an smtp server and allows Ricoh to login with no authentication on the LAN to send mail, then emailrelay will login to any Internet email server using authentication including SSL/TLS and will relay the mail from the Ricoh.

emailrelay is very configurable. I restricted our setup so only the copier IP address could login to emailrelay, and I turned off all other ports emailrelay is able to listen to. I made IP static on the desktop running emailrelay so the service could always be reachable by the Ricoh.

Couldn't have been easier. Sure beat buying a new machine, particularly since ours is in really nice shape.

    Sound similar to Stunnel.

SSL with authentication is required for Gmail. Some of the minolta machines does not support SSL and most do. I think you first need to sort out certificates on the Ricoh's to get SSL running.

You need any SMTP server that does not need authentication.
Or login details for an account that does but not gmail.

The gmail bot detection is also on the case of copytechs creating gmail accounts for this purpose. The account locks it self if the subject and text body does not change every few messages, then you need to log in and proof you are not a bot.
