Aficio 3045 pale scans/copies

Hi Guys

I have a problem with a 3045, which occasionally produces pale copies and scans on one side. Prints are fine, so its obvioulsy optical, but this is the funny thing, if you switch the machine off and then on, the fault disappears. I originaly thought the scanner head was twisted, as the install was a bit hairy, but with the switching off and then on, I don't think so.

Any ideas?

The HDD went down a copule of weeks later, replaced it and the fault never returned
