I bought a Ricoh drive for an MP8001 as I wasn't sure about the new machines with their SATA drives - when it arrived it was a standard Hitachi disc drive!

In lack of anything else I've used 500GB and 1TB drives directly from the shelf (no fdisk or anything) and it has worked like a charm. This was on an MPC2800 and an MPC4000. It's an awful waste of good space, but if you need a harddrive and that's the only thing you can get your hands on it works.

Oh and the best thing about using 3rd party drives is that you get throw out those #¤#¤"!! Hitachi-I'll-crash-within-a-week drives and put in a better brand.
    Peace sells, but who's buying?
